FINALLY...

I can turn on the TV on now without hearing about Anna Nicole Smith's "tragic death". Quite frankly, I was getting sick of hearing about her troubled and over-publicized life. YES, it's tragic when someone dies, but it doesn't make it somehow more tragic because she was a "celebrity".

In other news, interesting article

"Pupils should be taught sex education based on their sexual experience..."

What an interesting concept; teaching kids how to think rather than pointing at them accusingly and saying "NO" like you would a pet.

Though thinking back to how this might have been when I was 13 and being taught sex-ed by my principal is nightmare inducing, to say the least.

Anomaly?

You be the judge...

I think I was just hit on...

I just got asked if I knew how hard it was to see an olive on a black shirt...

Well, I don't...do you?

Wii finally own one

Wow, I've been AWOL for a while, so here's an update...

We finally own a Nintendo Wii. It took waking up at 7:30 on a Sunday morning to get it, but as it turns out, it was worth it. Now the party begins (aka it's time to act like Wiitards with the Wiimotes).

That's all I have to say about that.

Chicago is....cold.

I'm in Chicago right now, and the temperature is a whopping 16 with a wind chill of 1 (no I didn't miss a digit there). If you need proof here it is...

I'll take better pictures later when the sun is out.

Still Alive

Still alive and kicking (unlike my great great grandmother, who is alive but only kicking with one leg because of the stroke a few years back...just kidding!)

I figure I might as well dust this Blog off and update it a little more often, so here's a recap of recent weeks:

  • We are getting a dog next summer, a Pug to be exact. We plan on making it a house dog, so that should be tons of fun. :)
  • We are shopping for a 7.1 home theater system, mostly because it's cool, and partly because we KNOW the lady next door would love to have our sub woofer rattle the windows in her living room (at the very least it would give her a legitimate reason to write a letter to the home owner's association, plus it would give her something to talk to her friends about when they all get together to play bingo, or whatever you play when you get that age). The next question becomes whether or not we can coerce friends with food and drink in exchange for helping us install it.
  • We are also looking for a 50" or 55" HDTV...yeah, we dream big. Well, actually "looking for" is not exactly the phrase; "looking at" would be more appropriate. We know what we want, we are just "looking for" the price to come down just a little more, since it's slightly more expensive than the dog (extreme emphasis placed on the word slightly).
  • We are going to get a Nintendo Wii soon (and hope there is not a freak accident involving a Wiimote being thrown through a 50" TV).
  • I have the Most Awesome Computer Ever (tm) on my wish list at Newegg.com :)

I'm not quite so sure that Santa could fit all of this in his sleigh this Christmas.

I found out that I get to visit Chicago in early December for a training class. I had a friend inform me that when he visited Chicago in December of last year, the average temperature for the week was 7 (yes that's a single digit) and that it snowed about 3 feet. SEVEN should never be the temperature...anywhere.

Training is Over

Been away for a week (or two, I can't remember anymore). Last week was extremely busy; we had a training class all week, all day, everyday. It was pretty hectic, but at least we learned even cooler ways to break the system we write software for. I got a cool new computer out of the deal though: a pentium D ~3Ghz with 2GB of RAM, and a 160 GB hard drive. Basically a computer geeks dream...well, almost...the real dream system would be my system I have configured at newegg.com.

So I turn 29 this Thursday, which is all fine and dandy to me; age is just a number anyway. I feel just as young as I did at 21 (healthier though). We shall see...

More Dragon*Con...

Still remembering more about the event with each passing day. One thing's for sure, I have been on my guard since Dragon*Con because I know there is going to be retribution for some of the things I did in the hotel room 3 mornings in a row. Accounts of the situation(s) will vary, but I can sum it up by saying that my friends saw more of me than they bargained for, in every conceivable way. I pulled the following 3 "maneuvers" on them Friday morning, Saturday morning, and Sunday morning, first thing after everyone got up and about:

1) The Batwing
2) The Brain
3) The Teste-tuck

If you've seen the movie Waiting you'll know what #1 and #2 are; if not, go watch the movie right now. To find out what #3 is, either watch Silence of the Lambs or ask the nearest guy friend you know, but it's fairly self-explainatory and quite elegent if pulled off (?) correctly. The downside to the humor is that I know I have it coming back to me, probably tenfold, so I must remain vigilant and watch where my eyes wander now.

Hopefully they'll decide to venture here sometime soon.

Dragon*Con

In one word: wow. Describing the entire event in a blog would be impossible because (1) WAY too much happened, (2) there's some of it that I still can't remember, (3) no matter how good I get with the English language, there are still things that I saw/heard/said/did that I couldn't possibly describe. Fortunately enough, I have about 500 pictures that document the weekend much better than I could ever hope to.

In a nutshell (and I mean a really small one) here's a day by day account of the high points:

Thursday - left for Atlanta, got involved in a minor accident. Everything is fine though, it was more or less a fender bender (or more accurately a rear door bender...we were in a rental SUV). Once we got there, the adventure began; finding a parking place in downtown atlanta at 6:00pm is not an easy thing, even if you know the area. Fortunately for us, we found a pay-by-day parking lot...best $64 we spent. After chilling, getting dinner, and registering so we could pick up our badges, we went to a party and drank a drink that is known only as "blue". The word "blue" is of little significance to the drink itself, it could be "green", or "red" or even "chartreuse" and the result would still be the same. After watching a hypnotist do his thing at the party, we left and myself, jeremy, and mike walked...no, stumbled...our way to the vehicle and back. Beyond that, I can only remember bits and pieces...one of which was Jeremy worshipping my solo cup in front of our hotel (did I mention that "blue" was pretty potent?) There was also a band on this night somewhere, but I can't remember if we did that before or after the party with "blue".

Friday - recover from Thursday night. This was also the official Dragon*Con start day. A lot of this day revolved around wandering and shooting pictures of people in interesting costumes. I think we watched an Adult Swim panel with the creators of The Venture Brothers as well, though I can't quite remember because the days blur together so much. At the end of the day we watched a Whose Line Is It Anyway? round (preliminary I think) that was pretty humorous. I really don't remember what we did Friday night.

Saturday - this was probably the most energetic day for all of us. We rested good Friday night, and had a good time on Saturday. Saturday night was the most interesting; after many drinks we found ourselves just wandering around and shooting pictures. Then there was a rave, a band, a dance floor, and more funny social commentary than I can actually remember. I think the phrase for Saturday night was "I guess 'fat' must be the new 'black'..." in honor of those who don't realize that they have too much...surface area...to be wearing what they are wearing. This phrase applied to both men and women alike. Just because you are willing to show your ass and/or breasts doesn't mean that you SHOULD.

Sunday - slept until 12 to recover from the night before. Most of the rest of the day included wandering around through all of the overpriced merchandise in the vendors area and window shopping. Besides watching the Whose Line Is It Anyway? finals, Sunday was rather uneventful.

Monday - came back home. A rather uneventful day as well, to contrast a very eventful weekend.

More details will be added as I can think of them, I promise. :)

The Whole Truth (well, to me anyway)

This is something I've felt compelled to write for a while, and it's as much to keep myself motivated as it is to shed some light on the health-conscious side of me to people who might not understand. I feel like there has been some misconceptions as to why I do what I do, or even WHAT I do, so read and become enlightened...

Most people who would call me their friend know that for quite some time I have been fairly good at taking care of myself, with regard to eating (somewhat) right and getting regular exercise. It's definitely had its share of ups and downs, but on the whole it's been positive for the last 5 years or so. January 2006 started probably the most intense, deliberate effort I've ever went through to make eating right and regular exercise a part of my lifestyle. Actually, if I wanted to be really technical about it, July 2005 would have been the start date, because I began research then. Needless to say, once it started, this generated lots of questions/comments/funny glances at first, but I think everyone has gotten used to it. Oddly enough, I still seem to have to entertain the same questions/comments over and over again to people who I don't think quite understand what I am doing. Some of them are honest enough, and some get pretty annoying, but here are some more common ones, in no particular order:

  • Are you still doing your diet?
  • You are skinny enough already, why are you on a diet? (I guess some people think that 5'7" 158 lbs is unhealthy)
  • Can you eat __________ on your diet?
  • Why do you drink those? (protein shakes)
  • You a little obsessed with this.
  • I don't know how you do it, I could never do all that you do.

"Are you still doing your diet?"
I don't call what I do "a diet". The word "diet" carries with it the connotation that it's something that you're either ON or OFF of. A "diet" is something that people say they "did last year", or something they "did one time" (or two time, or three, etc) but now you couldn't tell because now they are bigger than they were when they started. With me that is not the case. What I have done is a lifestyle change. I am gradually moving myself into a state where eating right and exercising is as much a part of my life as waking up and going to work in the morning; that's how serious I am about it.

"You are skinny enough already, why are you on a diet?"
I don't consider myself skinny, I consider myself at nearly a good, lean weight for my size. It's somewhat depressing that now we consider 20-30 lbs overwieght to be "normal sized" or "just big boned", and I don't wish to fall in that demographic anymore. For me, not fitting the status quo is just as much motivation as getting healthy, I've been part of that status quo for far too long. Today the de facto order of things, if you will, seems to be GET MARRIED >> GET OVERWEIGHT AND LAZY >> GET OLD. Seems to me like it should be the other way around; when you get married, you may have someone else (or more, if you have kids) depending on you, so wouldn't you figure you at least owe it to them (and you) to keep yourself healthy so that you can handle the hardships life might throw at you? Just something to think about...

"Can you eat __________ on your diet?"
With regard to WHAT I can/can't eat on my diet, there are very few hard rules I have for myself. Some things are on the "can't" list just because of what they are. I have a range of minimum/maximum calories I want to consume everyday, as well as what ratios of carbs/protein/fat I want to consume those calories in; everything else is up to me. This isn't to say that I'm always super strict with what I eat. I'm working toward a healthy lifestyle, not trying to deprive myself of the experience of being human. There are a few times a week that, for the sake of being social, I eat things that I wouldn't normally eat on an "average" day. I just make sure the line between "sometimes" and "all the time" is clearly defined.

Why do you drink those? (protein shakes)
I drink my protein supplements because adequate protein intake everyday is one part of my "diet". Why, you ask? Because, among other things, protein is the building blocks of muscle, and muscle is good, in my opinion. Muscle is how I differentiate "skinny" people from "lean" people.
I generally consume around 200g of protein per day, and if that doesn't sound like a lot to you, try this: count up how much you eat on an average day. How many is it? 50, maybe 60, or less? Now multiply that by 4 and imagine, for a second, what kind of change in your eating habits it would take for YOU to consume that much protein. THAT is why I drink protein shakes.

You a little obsessed with this.
I'd like to refer to it as "focused". To me, "obsessed" is a word that lazy people use to describe dedication.

I don't know how you do it, I could never do all that you do.
Well, no, you can't, because in making that statement, you've denied yourself even a chance. There's no magic to what I'm doing, I'm not superhuman or anything, it's simply a choice followed by an action. Make a decision and do it, rain or shine, whether you feel like it or not, and before long you won't feel right NOT doing it. Believe me, when I started I didn't think I could "do all that" either, but now I'm glad that I did do it.

Hopefully I answered some questions in that whole heap of typing above. I have a blog entry describing my "diet", dated sometime in January, so if you wonder about specifics, scroll down a bit. Finally, as a response to the question that's likely still lingering, "Are you still doing your diet?", I will answer with a question: Am I still breathing? Remember that fitness is a journey, not a destination.

Bump-Bump-Chik!

I came to a realization this past weekend in the middle of our jam session: I wouldn't make a very good drummer. It's not so much that I don't have rhythm, because I can play guitar over a drumbeat just fine, it's just that my drumming sounds something like 17 metronomes clicking in unison at different beats. I can't possibly be expected to sit down with 9+ THINGS in front of me that make noise when you hit them with wooden sticks, and NOT try to hit everything in one single swoop. Generally when I sit behind drums, I do about as much hitting myself as I do the drums. So many more jokes could be made about my drumming, but I don't have the words for all of them right now, so the remainder of this post will be expressed in the form of a 15 minute guitar solo during our next jam session.

...and speaking of "solo", the phrase from this past weekend is "I was leaving room for a bass solo!"

We Finally Did It

Yes indeed, we finally did what we've talked about doing: got together and jammed. We decided that rather than talking about it and buying gear for it we would do it. It was all good too, we actually didn't sound like a bunch of monkeys banging on things. It certainly wasn't "polished", but it was an excellent first go at it. Here are some pics for you're viewing pleasure

Bobbiestan and Jeremy laying down the groove

me (I wear sunglasses to cover up the fact that I'm actually a robot and I shoot laser beams from my eyes)

Christie learning to "beat the boogers..."

all in all, a good time was had by all...and we plan to do it again and take more pictures next time.

Freudian slip, or worse?

Sometimes there's a subtle but HUGE difference in things you say, and things you *almost* say. For example, a few minutes ago I was in the breakroom here at work, and feeling particularly mischieveous, so I turned to a friend and jokingly said "I'm about to brew a double pack of REGULAR coffee into the decaf pot." , thinking that it might be funny to watch the decaf drinker tweak all afternoon

Innocent enough, right? What almost came out of my mouth was: "I'm 'bout to double dutch that decaf pot!" I don't even know what that means but it sound exceptionally dirty, and illegal at work. Supposing I had in fact double dutched the decaf pot I'm sure we would have been greeted by a sign or a staff meeting tomorrow in which the phrase "There is to be no double dutching of the decaf pot during business hours" would be used.

Somebody hold me, I'm scared...

I don't really know what to call this post so I will sit here and type until I think of something....or maybe not...

I guess since I own this blog, I should make more of an effort to update it from time to time so everyone can read the boring details of my life. This week has been like any other, a little boring at the moment but no real crisis to speak of. Saw Clerks 2 this past weekend with a group of about 54937539....actually, make that 18. Easily one of the funniest movies I've ever seen, check it out!

Went to Guitar Center this weekend for the second time in as many weeks and I came to an epiphany: it would not do at all for me to go in there with a spare $5000 to kick around. Despite Guitar Center's evil reputation among internet forums, I actually don't mind the place all that much. At the VERY least, they don't bug me while I'm poorly playing 3 chords through an amp that's worth more than my car. I did get a chance to play a guitar that I had been wanting to play for years and never got the chance: a Parker Fly

Yeah, it's strange looking, but to me it's the best looking, best playing guitar I've ever laid hands on, and if price was no concern I would totally own one (this one I played was $1500 USED...like I said "worth more than my car"). Ahh, maybe one day.

Well, time to get back to it. What exactly "it" is remains to be seen, but I promise when I find out, you'll be the 2nd to know.

Another Happy Birthday

So the events of this past Saturday night were pretty much the same as the events of Mike's birthday night, except that I could see straight on the way home (no, I wasn't driving in either situation).

Funny situation from Saturday night: 5 people go in one vehicle, all ordering drinks at the bar, and midway through drink #4, we make the following realization:

How are we getting home tonight? We didn't really follow proper designated driver protocol, did we?

Fortunately the question was answered several hours later.

The band was very good, though I will admit I would rather have the guitarists guitar and amps sooner than I'd like to see the band again. They did do some interesting music, and some interesting medleys as well. How one band can go from Funky Cold Medina to a medley consisting of Paradise City and Sweet Home Alabama eludes me, but it kept the energy (and volume) in the place pretty high, so a good time was had by all.

Fyi, every day since the kayaking trip has been a total blur; if anyone can remember anything that has happened, please let me know :)

Just Like Sea Monkies

Wednesday = Monday, that's all that can be said about today. Today is coming off of one of the busiest weekends I can remember. To recap...
Friday - typical work day, then I worked out, and went to be reletively early (that is to say, before midnight)
Saturday - grocery shopping (for Sunday), a trip to Home Depot, yard work, then went with some friends to see Superman. Pretty good movie, overall I'd say it was above average.
Sunday - another trip to Home Depot (one more this week and we'll probaby get our own VIP line), then a big cookout with friends in the afternoon. very fun!
Monday - left at 6:00am on a trip to Six Flags. It was HOT, but fun. Goliath was exactly as they describe it, a "giant among coasters". One word: wow.
Tuesday - tried to rest, visited the family and had lunch. It was a mostly relaxing day except for the travelling.

So yes, it was a busy weekend. I have my fingers crossed that this coming weekend won't be so crowded with stuff. But we shall see.

Yes, just like sea monkies...

Kayaking Trip Aftermath

The trip was fun, and I wasn't injured in a horrible accident involving an Igloo cooler and a double sided oar, so that was good. The physical and/or emotional injuries were minimal, which is also good. There was a couple of scrapes, and a little tipping over, but on the whole, we did pretty well.

Hopefully everyone involved wasn't too sore when Sunday morning rolled around. I was actually quite well, but I didn't really expect to be sore in the first place. I had been working out harder over the last 3-4 weeks to prepare, so I didn't have so much as a single sore muscle.

Bottom line, the kayaking experience was nice, as was nature and the scenery. All in all, I saw 2 bald eagles and 7 spread eagles that day. Needless to say, the bald eagles were much more majestic.
